Shangrilla is a the most beautiful and well-known place in Skardu. It is at almost 40 minutes drive from Skardu city. There is a lake in Shangrilla also known as Shangrilla lake, but it is an artificial lake. Shangrilla is a tourist restaurant as well as a picnic spot. Every year people from around Pakistan and abroad come to see this place. This place has got a name due to its scenic beauty and natural views. It is located in the beautiful valley of KACHURA, which also a place worth seeing.
Satpara lake is located in Skardu, it is the most loved and beautiful place in Skardu city. It is at almost 30 minutes drive from main Skardu city. The special thing about this lake is that it is natural lake and it is surrounded by mountains from all the sides, looking like a celestial place. The main source of water to this lake is through “Deosai stream”. Satpara has got great importance to the city primarily because it is the source of fresh water to the city and secondarily it is a tourist attraction and a lot of people are earning a living due to this lake. It is also a fishing place of fresh water trout. This lake is having a variety of marine life, these includes fresh water trout, salmon and some other species of fishes.
Katpana Lake is also a famous place in Skardu, well known for its colored fish and scenic beauty. It is at almost 20 minutes drive from Skardu city. Katpana Lake is comparatively a small lake and it is occupying a small area but it is rich in terms of beauty. Most of the people in Skardu visit this lake during summers and early spring. A number of tourists also visit this place. There is a variety of colored fish here, people from skardu go to this lake for fishing. But due to excessive fishing their number has lowered to a very dangerous extent.
Shiger Fort is one of the most loved tourist places in Skardu. Every year hundreds of tourists come to visit this place. It is in Shiger valley, 32 km from skardu city. It is also a historical place as it reminds of the rulers of ancient Shiger. It is called “Phong Khar” in locallanguage, “Phong” means a big rock and “khar” means fort. The foundation of this fort was made on a big rock thats why it got this name. It is also a wonder of ancient arcitecture and design of the 17th century. Now it is turned into a luxury guest house and it has total 20 luxury rooms including suites.
Shiger valley is the one of the most beautiful valleys of Baltistan. The mighty K2 is also in this great valley. This valley is full of scenic beauty and eye catching views. The mighty K2 is also in this great valley. It stretches about 180 km from Skardu to Askole. It is a gateway to the lofty mountain range of Karakorum. The people of Shiger are very peaceful, hospitable and friendly. This valley is blessed with immense natural wealth. Majority of the population here are farmers and shepherds. It is a very remote and hardly accessible area but in the last few years the government has did some improvement in the roads but still its not that good. The white marble of Shiger valley is also very famous but the thing for which Shiger is well known are the gem-stones. The well-known Gems found in this valley are Sphene, Spessartine, Beryl, Apatite, zoisite, rutile quartz, epidote, and morganite.
The Deosai plain is also located in Skardu Valley. It is at an average elevation of 4,114 metres (13,497 ft) above the sea level, making the Deosai Plains the second highest plateau in the world. It stretches to an area of 3,000 square kilometres (1,200 sq mi). It is one of the most beautiful picnic spots in Skardu. It is also rich in flora an fauna. The ideal time for visiting this place is from June to August. As it is on a high altitude that’s why it is mostly covered by snow. In spring season it is covered with beautiful flowers and a variety of herbs. It is also the home of a variety of wildlife like Himalayan Ibex, Red fox, Golden Marmot, Grey Wolf, Ladakh Urail, Snow leopard and over 124 resident and migratory birds.
